Project Overview
A detailed technical and financial feasibility study for an integrated waste-to-energy system at Irufushi Beach & Spa Resort — assessing daily waste volumes, combustible waste composition, energy demand profiles, and the economic case for a combined gasification-fermentation-upcycling facility.
The Challenge
Irufushi currently transports all solid waste by boat to Noonu Atoll's regional waste management facility — a costly, weather-dependent, and carbon-intensive operation. The resort's sustainability commitments require a credible pathway to on-island waste independence.
Our Solution
OneTouch Group conducted a six-week on-site waste characterisation study, energy audit, and site assessment. A phased implementation plan was developed: Phase 1 (kitchen waste fermentation + can upcycling), Phase 2 (gasification power), with financial modelling showing 4.2-year payback at current diesel prices.
Results & Impact
- Waste characterisation: 6.8 t/day total, 2.4 t/day combustible fraction
- Recommended system: 100 kW gasification + 5 t/day fermentation unit
- Projected diesel displacement: 85% of current consumption
- Financial model: 4.2-year payback, MYR 1.2M annual savings
